Trademark registration in Paraguay is handled by DINAPI (National Directorate of Intellectual Property) and works with a fee system typical of the region: fees are not set in guaraníes but in minimum daily wages, the commercial reference wage unit, which the Executive adjusts every year for inflation. But the decisive particularity is another one: in Paraguay you cannot file a trademark application on your own. The law requires the file to be sponsored by a registered industrial property agent, or filed through a special power of attorney granted to one — and this applies equally to individuals and companies, nationals and foreigners. Add to this the longest opposition period in the region: 60 business days.

Is a trademark what you need to protect in Paraguay?
A trademark protects the name and sign that identify your business, but it does not cover the shape of the product, the invention behind it or the creative work. Each right is filed separately with DINAPI, with fees expressed in minimum daily wages — and the same requirement applies to all of them: the file must be submitted by a registered industrial property agent.
Industrial design
Protects the external appearance of a product: its lines, colours or shape. In Paraguay it is registered as an “industrial drawing or model”, under Law No. 868/81.
Example: the silhouette of a bottle or the design of a package.
Term: 5 years, renewable for two equal periods — 15 years maximum.
