How to register a trademark in Panama with DIGERPI
In Panama, trademarks are registered with the General Directorate of the Industrial Property Registry (DIGERPI) of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, under Law 35 of 1996 as amended by Law 61 of 2012. It has three particularities: every application is filed through a lawyer; oppositions are not decided by the office but before the commercial courts; and the ten-year term is counted from the filing date, not from grant.

Is a trademark what you need to protect in Panama?
A trademark protects the name and sign that identify your business, but it does not cover the shape of the product, the invention behind it or the creative work. Trademarks, patents and designs are handled by DIGERPI, under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, always through a lawyer; copyright, by the National Copyright Directorate of the Ministry of Culture.
Industrial design
Protects the external appearance of a product: its shape, lines or ornamentation. It does not protect the name.
Example: the silhouette of a bottle or the design of a package.
