Patent Registration in Canada
Registering a patent is the legal process that grants exclusive rights over an invention, product, technical solution or innovative development, preventing third parties from manufacturing, copying or marketing it without authorization in Canada.
Our firm provides complete advice to patent a product or technology, either through a national patent, international patent or protection under the PCT system, with a technical-legal approach to guarantee solid and registrable protection.

Is a patent what you need to protect in Canada?
A patent protects the technical solution of an invention, but it does not cover the name under which it is sold, the appearance of the product or the creative work. In Canada a single office, CIPO, handles trademarks, patents, designs and copyright registration, although each has its own procedure and fee.
Trademark
Protects the name, logo or sign that identifies your business and sets it apart from competitors. In Canada it is registered with CIPO, per class of the Nice Classification, and since 2019 prior use is not required.
Example: your company name or your product logo.
Term: 10 years, renewable indefinitely for equal periods.
Register a trademark in CanadaIndustrial design
Protects the external appearance of a product: its shape, lines or ornamentation. It does not protect the name.
Example: the silhouette of a bottle or the design of a package.
Register an industrial design in CanadaCopyright
Protects works: texts, music, software, photographs or audiovisual works. It arises upon creation; in Canada registration is voluntary, is made with CIPO itself and serves as evidence of ownership.
Example: the code of an app or an illustrated catalog.
Register copyright in CanadaIs your trademark already registered in Canada? Registration lasts 10 years and renewal costs CAD 595.06 for the first class and CAD 185.49 for each additional class (2026 fees). Trademarks registered before the 2019 reform keep their 15-year term until their first renewal. And do not forget use: 3 years after registration, a third party may request cancellation if the trademark is not used in Canada.
Who We Are
From Uruguay, to the world
Since 1930, at Dubourg we’ve been helping companies and entrepreneurs protect what sets them apart most: their brand. We work from Montevideo with clients around the world, supporting them at every stage of their growth—from the initial registration to entering new markets.
One firm, many countries
It all starts with registering your trademark where your business currently operates. When the time comes to expand, our network of international correspondents extends that protection to other countries—all through a single, coordinated process managed from here and at the best possible rates. Those same colleagues entrust us with their trademark filings in Uruguay, a relationship built on trust over decades.
Clarity from Day One
Uruguay is known for its stability and clear rules, and that’s how we work, too: transparent quotes, with no hidden costs or surprises.
Security Before Every Step
Before moving forward, we search intellectual property databases worldwide to verify that your trademark is available. That way, you make informed decisions—not ones based on uncertainty.
